Many aspects of ThumMusic System have been patented. Development work on courseware, music notation software, and the like is expected to commence in early 2006. All ThumMusic-related software and courseware is expected to be developed using open-source tools and methods. Although the terms of ThumMusic's patent license have not yet been decided, Thumtronics currently[33] expects (a) to make the ThumMusic System (Pitch-Names) openly available on a royalty-free basis for any purpose, and (b) to make the ThumMusic PLUS System openly available on a royalty-free basis for (i) personal self-education and (ii) school-based non-commercial use.
